There are restaurants you discover, and then there are restaurants that raise you. Shunji falls firmly into the second category for me.
I’ve been eating Shunji-san’s food for well over a decade now. Long enough to watch him refine, sharpen, and distill what he does. Long enough to understand that what’s happening at that counter isn’t about trends or hype or optics. It’s about devotion. Craft. Repetition. Care. The kind of care that doesn’t announce itself but becomes unmistakable once you sit down.
Shunji and his wife Yuko are the center of the experience. Hospitality here isn’t transactional. It’s familial. You’re not being “handled,” you’re being welcomed. Yuko’s warmth sets the tone the moment you walk in, and Shunji’s quiet intensity carries you through the meal. Together, they’ve created something deeply personal in a city that often rewards spectacle over substance.
